MASTERING FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT: THE SQUAT

How many times a day do you bend down to pick something up? Can you easily complete the movement and get back on your feet? Much like our bodies need nutritious food to function, proper movement is essential for our health and wellness. Being able to complete functional movements such as a squat is a step towards a healthier life.


Mastering Functional Movement in Bentonville

If you can sit in a chair with your feet flat on the ground, then you know how to do a squat. The challenge is learning how to support yourself in that position. To do a proper squat, you have to be able to:

  • Sit back like you're sitting on a chair
  • Keep your knees above your ankles
  • Keep your upper body perpendicular to the floor

Holding a PVC pipe, stick or bat above your head while squatting is a good way to test if you can keep your upper body straight throughout the movement. When completing the exercise, focus on proper technique and full range of motion.
